Running is not easy, but the inherent difficulties of this sport are exactly what attract many enthusiasts. Running rewards runners with small victories, making them come back even if they swear never to run again. However, these difficulties are also the reason why non-runners may never put on running shoes. To some extent, we all have had some 'fear' of running, which is normal. So, don't worry, you will gradually overcome them.

'I will be the slowest runner in history.'

For some reason, speed is usually the most concerning issue for runners. 'Yes, I run, but I run very slowly,' an average runner might say. But running has much more to offer beyond speed.

How to overcome: If you can't stand running slowly, then train hard. Follow a scientific training plan, maintain a balanced diet and rest well. Compare only with yourself, not with others. But the most effective method is to stop focusing on speed and pay more attention to how many times you run a week, how far you run each time, and how you feel while running, to reduce your stress.

'I'm afraid I won't complete the task and will give up.'

Running is hard. That's why it's scary, but it's also its significance—running gives a sense of accomplishment, making it all worthwhile. Don't doubt yourself; I guarantee that every new distance you unlock and every personal best will be unforgettable. But the physical and mental challenges are something every runner has to face.

How to overcome: Train your brain while training your body, using mental resilience to help your body get through tough times. Most of the time, our mind gives up before our body does. Find an inspiring motto for yourself to motivate you when you want to give up. But if it's due to injury or physical discomfort rather than psychological factors, then accept your 'physical malfunction' and give yourself a break.

'Will I get injured?!'

Even the best runners are troubled by injuries, so it's not unreasonable for average runners to worry about getting hurt.

How to overcome: Most injuries stem from overuse and imbalance—these are usually predictable and preventable. Gradually increase your running volume, stretch and relax promptly after running, respect rest days, and pay attention to signals from your body. Ignoring minor injuries and pushing through often doesn't end well.

'Will I look silly/fat/ugly while running?'

When learning a new sport, it's natural to feel awkward about new movements. Although running doesn't require a ball or racket, it doesn't mean you don't need to learn how to run. The first time running, especially in front of others, can be embarrassing.

How to overcome: The fact is, everyone is busy thinking about themselves; no one will notice you. At the starting line of a race, everyone is preoccupied with their own gear, condition, and goals, so how you look is not their concern...

'I might hate running...'

If you've ever been punished by running laps or begged your PE teacher for a passing grade in a running test, you might not have had a good start with running... If you were the 'clumsy kid' left behind on the track, you might naturally think you'll never love running, or you'll never start running. But when running is a choice rather than a compulsion, it has countless possibilities. You'll never know unless you try.

How to overcome: Stick with it. You will run better, faster, and stronger. Running is an activity where you can easily see the benefits—the more you invest, the more you gain.
