I want to ask:

How long does a pair of running shoes actually last?

How long does a pair of running shoes actually last? This might be one of the most concerning questions about running gear for every runner. Today, Guanguan has invited her best friend, the running witch 'Dong Niu,' to chat with everyone about this ultimate mystery.

Regarding this question, the running gear community has an internationally recognized lifespan:500-1000 kilometers.

Let's assume the lifespan of these running shoes is 800 kilometers. Taking a runner who runs 100 kilometers a month as an example, he runs about 25 kilometers a week, so the lifespan of these running shoes is 8 months. Of course, this is calculated by ignoring personal physique, running habits, and training methods.

It's not absolute.

Generally speaking, after a pair of running shoes has run 80 kilometers, the shock absorption effect of the sole is only 75% of the original; after about 200 kilometers, the shock absorption effect is only about 65% of the original; when the mileage reaches 400-800 kilometers, the shock absorption effect may be less than 60%.

Of course, the lifespan of each pair of running shoes is not absolute and largely depends on the type of running shoes. For example, air-cushioned shoes on the market are more durable than lightweight shoes. If your steps are heavy, or you like to run by dragging your feet on the road (don't ask me why some people like to run this way)... coupled with your weight, running habits, and the frequency of using your running shoes, the lifespan of your running shoes is actually shorter than you might think.

So, how do we calculate the lifespan of a pair of running shoes? Here are a few self-testing methods.

1. Record mileage

If your monthly mileage is 100 kilometers, about 25 kilometers per week, your annual mileage is 1200 kilometers, so you can replace your running shoes in 8 to 10 months.

Here's a tip: Open the Codoon APP - click 'My' - Equipment - Add 'Your Equipment,' you can record the mileage of each pair of running shoes. Codoon's running shoe library provides most of the brand running shoes you have seen. If you really can't find it, you can add custom running shoes, as shown in the example by Dong Niu below. This way, you can visually see the mileage of each pair of running shoes, making it easier to replace them.

2. Body pain reminders

There are many factors that determine the lifespan of running shoes, but your feet have the most genuine feeling. If you feel physical pain while running, and other external factors are ruled out, it is recommended to change your running shoes.

For example, Dong Niu had a pair of lightweight running shoes, and it was very comfortable to run five kilometers easily. But as a novice, I once used them to run a half marathon, resulting in severe discomfort in the soles and Achilles tendon. After being advised by an expert, I learned that lightweight shoes are not suitable for long-distance running. This is a negative example of using the wrong shoes for running.

At the same time, some runners prefer certain running shoes, thinking that they look undamaged and fit well, so there is no need to change them. If discomfort occurs at this time, considering the usage time of the running shoes, you may need to replace them.

3. Self-checking running shoes

As we all know, the sole of running shoes is the most durable part, but it is not the best indicator of the shoe's lifespan. The midsole of the running shoe is the part that truly bears the weight. When this part reaches a 'tired' state, we can conclude that the shoe has passed its prime. If the running shoes start to become stiff, flat, and lack flexibility, it's time to replace them.

4. Avoid exposing running shoes to the sun

Running shoes are not dirt-resistant and are relatively troublesome to clean. It is recommended that runners never wear running shoes as rain shoes. If they get wet or washed, do not expose them to the sun; let them dry in the shade, otherwise, they are prone to delamination.

Here are a few tips for cleaning and maintaining running shoes:

1. After running on a rainy day, you can choose to wrap the upper with soft tissue to absorb moisture and place the toe or sole in a ventilated and dry place to air dry naturally.

2.Clean the shoes with a damp sponge or mild soapy water. If the running shoes are made of nylon or have mesh, you can use a shoe brush to clean the surface of the shoes.

3. The insoles can be cleaned with a sponge or soft brush. Do not use a washing machine or dryer to clean removable insoles, as this may damage the material of the sole.

4.Lightly soiled sports shoes can be cleaned using regular cleaning methods, while heavily soiled ones need to be soaked in warm water and then carefully cleaned.

5. Try to run on soft surfaces, such as grass or trails, to minimize the use of the outsole and reduce wear.
