running lingo the marathon community's oddities

Cow dung has been silent for a long time. Old Zou asked me why I haven't submitted my homework yet. Old Niu racked his brains but couldn't find a topic. Most of the veteran runners in the circle are into trail running and probably wouldn't bother to read my ramblings. So, I'll summarize a few typical types of runners in our circle.

Diligent Beauty Type:

"Clearly could rely on looks but insists on relying on strength"—that's Sister Dabao. With her standout looks and graceful figure, she could easily be a beauty queen, but she is determined to become a champion "harvester."

Sister Dabao is particularly harsh on herself. She can't stay idle and engages in interval training, weightlifting, and mountain climbing. Her high-intensity training has given her ultra-low body fat and eight-pack abs. Every time I see Sister Dabao, she is as happy as a child, much to the delight of her little fanboys.

Silent Hard Worker Type:

Usually quiet, doesn't post on social media or check-in, but when it comes to races, they are like a wild horse, leaving everyone in the dust. That's you—Danran.

This guy is super low-key, rarely updates his social media, and always greets you with a smile.

"How are you running today?"

"Just running randomly, haven't trained."

After the Nanjing Marathon, this guy finally posted on social media. He finished the half marathon at a 4-minute pace, even under the challenge of Dragon's Neck, and his performance improved dramatically, leaving Old Niu's jaw dropped. Secretly training hard, can't mess with that!

Buddhist Slow Jogger Type:

The most enviable type in the running circle, they don't chase after results, never care about personal bests, and finish half or full marathons while chatting and eating along the way. Our running group has a tall runner, probably with legs as long as 1.8 meters, so I nicknamed her "Short-legged Na."

This person is the epitome of the Buddhist runner, usually just goofing around and walking to the finish line. During one of the seven major marathons in Nanjing, the Pukou Women's Marathon, even the Buddhist runner got Achilles tendonitis. To stay true to the Buddhist style, she wore holey shoes and strolled to the finish. Old Niu, who is highly competitive, is extremely envious of such runners.

Marathon Live Broadcaster Type:

Some people see marathons as a challenge to their limits, with unique commemorative significance. So, they do live broadcasts on social media from pre-race photos, starting line, on the course, to post-race reflections, sharing long essays about their monumental achievements, and their emotional experiences. While it might be considered spamming by veteran runners, for you, it's a significant event. I deeply respect that, but it does indeed disturb others.

Daily Check-in Sprinter Type:

Every day at six or seven in the morning, it's not the alarm clock or the great career of moving bricks that wakes me up, but Old Yan's morning run check-in. While you're still stretching and yawning, Old Yan has already finished 17-18 kilometers at a 4-minute pace. After successfully breaking 3 hours last month, he's getting faster and faster, happily pocketing an 800 yuan prize. Speaking of Old Yan, he went from a chubby guy with a big belly to running like the wind by sticking to daily morning runs. Who says running doesn't help you lose weight? It's just a matter of persistence.

Rarely missed a check-in, but got caught by Squid Brother.

Beginner Finisher Type:

Will Old Zou kill me for posting this picture?!

Old Zou, a silly little girl with dimples, travels the world with her sword. From her jump rope skills, you can tell she has severe hand-foot coordination issues, a typical non-athlete.

As one of Codoon's most outstanding editors (let's add 'one of' to avoid disputes), she is constantly influenced by the running circle. Whether it was a sudden impulse or someone's instigation, she signed up for her first marathon—Xiamen Marathon, and finished it with a silly smile before the cutoff time, making her a typical zero-foundation finisher. I believe Old Zou will get more and more into it, unable to extricate herself, and embark on the no-return path of marathon running.

Chatterbox Foodie Type:

Attention everyone, this is the grand finale. Yes, I'm talking about you, Octopus—Squid Brother. (Little fangirls are going to protest, but Old Niu has thick skin)

Bragging about breaking 3 hours, digging a big hole for himself, crying and crawling to get it done, following Brother Guai's training plan. Brother Guai, who is so fast that he has no friends, is someone to be respected from a distance.

Brother Guai's unique way of showing off is quite refreshing.

Posting his interval training check-ins, painstakingly training. Wishing Squid Brother success in the Shanghai MarathonPB, and reaping the rewards of his training.

However, before every race, his chatterbox and emcee persona is unmistakable.

"Come on, let's form a group and go for hotpot."

"I'm not targeting anyone, but everyone here can't drink." A wave of disdain.

"Running marathons is just for fun."

Posting wave after wave of cool marathon photos, but Old Niu isn't interested.

Marathons are like large-scale meetups for online friends. The first time is unfamiliar, but the second time, it's a friends' gathering.

Whether it's love at first sight or old friends reuniting with tears, enjoying hotpot and drinks while chatting is incredibly enjoyable.

No runner fits perfectly into any one type; they just lean more towards one or a few types. You can probably see a bit of yourself in each type. There is no right or wrong type of runner, and there's no need to look down on those different from yourself.

Every runner has different understandings and pursuits of running, and different initial motivations for starting. As long as you can stick to running and maintain a positive lifestyle, you are a great runner.

Dear runners, leave a comment and share which type or types you lean towards!

If you think you're unique, feel free to add your own type!
