a life without running the yema is not a perfect marathon life
I believe that every marathon runner has probably experienced participating in a wild race, whether it's 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, a half marathon, or a full marathon. These races might not be as formal or rigorous in terms of service level, event scale, course selection, or data accuracy, but wild races have their own benefits. Not long ago, I experienced a wild race that I found quite satisfactory.
Before participating in the Qingdao Marathon, I saw online that the second Binzhou Bincheng District National Marathon Invitational would be held on November 3rd, and registration was open. After careful consideration, I decided to sign up for four reasons: First, there was no registration fee. Even if something unexpected happened and I couldn't go, there would be no loss, though I would definitely try my best to attend. Second, the travel cost was low. Bincheng District is 50 kilometers from my home, so I could drive there and back on the same day without needing accommodation. Third, since breaking three hours, I've wanted to participate in more races to consolidate and stabilize my performance and to learn from each race. Fourth, the event had broad rewards. The top 10 received cash prizes, and places 11-50 received gifts. No matter what, I was confident I would win something, especially since there were many marathons nationwide on that day, and there might not be enough runners. Perhaps I could even make it into the top 10. Besides, my family's mine was almost depleted, and I needed to import some raw coal to fill the pit.
There were quite a few people from Zibo going to the race. We created a WeChat group with about a hundred people, where we arranged everything from picking up race materials, chartering buses, dining, and supplies. All I needed to do was focus on my daily training and race preparation.
On the day of the race, the vehicle we chartered had a minor issue. We were supposed to leave Zhangdian at 5:30, but we were delayed by 50 minutes. The race was scheduled to start at 8:30 AM, and we arrived at the starting point at 8:10. On the way, I was worried that the race might start half an hour early, which would have been a disaster. In wild races, it's possible for the start time to be early or late. One runner even mentioned a race where they arrived at the venue only to find out it had been canceled.
I hurriedly prepared for the race, and at 8:25, the gun went off. I had a good starting position in the first row, and as soon as the gun fired, I dashed out. The photographer captured this moment for me.
But to be fair, the racecourse was excellent. It was a newly paved asphalt road with almost no undulations. Especially in the first half, the course ran alongside a ten-mile lotus pond, with the sun shimmering on the water, creating a breathtaking view.
Perhaps I cared too much about this race, and my pace in the first half was a bit too fast, averaging 5 seconds faster than planned. Additionally, this was my fourth race in four consecutive weeks, and my body hadn't recovered from the earlier exertion. I was in a state of physical depletion and couldn't keep up with the pace. I completed the first half in 1:25, but then my pace started to drop. I tried to maintain a pace of around 4:15 per kilometer, but after a few kilometers, I couldn't hold it and had to stabilize at 4:25-4:30.
I won't go into the details of the process. Anyone who has run a marathon will have similar experiences. They say you train with tears and race with a smile, which is very true. Your performance is closely related to your usual efforts. Without hard work, there are no gains.
The race didn't use timing mats, and there was no timing device at the finish line. Instead, they used a stamping method at designated points. There were five stamping points in total, and at the finish line, they checked the number of stamps to issue the ranking cards. I finished as the 6th male in the full marathon, with my watch recording a distance of 41.6 kilometers and a total time of 2:56:47, averaging a pace of 4:15.
I leisurely collected my finisher items: a bottle of Lehu, a medal, and plenty of water. The good thing about wild races is that you can directly claim your prize or award with your ranking card after finishing. Isn't that exciting?
It was still early, so I took photos at the finish line, chatted, and boasted with others. The grueling feeling during the race was completely gone.
The Zibo team had a fruitful day. Sister Cui finished second in the women's full marathon, Sister Bai finished third, Brother An finished fourth in the men's full marathon, I finished sixth, Brother Kong finished seventh, Brother Sun finished tenth, and Brother Cui finished eleventh. We also achieved good results in the half marathon and other events.
The lunch was good, and it was important to replenish on time after the race, especially since it was close to the finish line.
Finally, let's summarize the pros and cons of this wild race.
Pros: The course was flat, the course was well-closed, the prizes were distributed on-site without tax deductions, and it was close to home, making travel convenient.
Cons: There were no timing facilities, no finisher certificates, few supply points and supplies, and few photographers on the course with no download channels.
What can I say? Since it's a wild race, I didn't have high expectations. As my friends said, who cares if the distance is accurate or if there are certificates? As long as there are prizes, it's good.
