durable breathable anti twist tnf ultra trail shoes
THE NORTH FACE® is a famous American outdoor brand, established in 1966. It is an important member of the publicly traded VF Corporation. The name originates from the coldest and most challenging north face of a mountain, and its logo is inspired by Half Dome, a peak in Yosemite National Park, California. The Chinese name '北面' signifies the spirit of exploring the toughest and most dangerous outdoor challenges. In 1997, The North Face® adopted a new slogan—'Never Stop Exploring,' which has since become the brand's most important motto.
1. Static Review
The black and white design of the shoebox is very 'outdoorsy,' with sketch-like images of grasslands and snowy mountains awaiting exploration. The Ultra Endurance II is designed by TNF to provide the stability and safety needed for long-distance training and races, making it a powerful tool for long-distance trail running.
I usually wear US size 8 for trail running shoes with an internal length of 260mm. After researching The North Face trail running shoes, I felt they would be suitable for long distances, so I chose a half size larger, US 8.5.
The Ultra Endurance II features a hollow design on the side, using lightweight mesh materials for the hollow parts, offering excellent weight reduction and breathability. The second generation of Ultra Endurance has upgraded the shoe upper to be more breathable and flexible. The elastic breathable mesh design improves internal and external breathability during trail running, enhancing comfort and keeping the feet dry.
The lightweight and soft dense mesh upper maintains ventilation inside the shoe, keeping the feet dry and comfortable.
The welded TPU and synthetic leather overlay structure provide support and protection for the feet, fitting comfortably.
The elastic rubber band with fixed laces fits comfortably over the instep, protecting against cold wind and preventing debris from entering the shoe.
The forefoot support plate in the midsole wraps around the middle and sides of the foot. This component allows necessary physiological movements such as bending, stretching, and twisting to adapt to changing terrains, while providing rigidity when needed.
The midsole uses Cardle Guide technology with dual-density EVA for enhanced shock absorption and support, ensuring stability even over long distances and protecting the feet from injuries.
Vibram® Megagrip has become a standard for trail running shoes, and TNF continues to use this proven material for the Ultra Endurance II outsole.
The North Face's FlashDry material, primarily used in skin-contact clothing, accelerates moisture evaporation and keeps the feet dry, enhancing comfort during long runs.
The insole with the logo fits the foot's curve, further enhancing comfort and dryness.
The pull tab at the heel makes it easy to put on and take off the shoes, a practical design detail.
2. Initial Impressions
The North Face trail shoes fit well, with a lightweight and soft upper. The forefoot moves freely without pressure, and the shoe fits comfortably even with thin socks.
When the laces are tightened, the foot is securely fixed inside the shoe, with the inner material feeling close to the skin.
The shoes feel very comfortable, and choosing a half size larger for long distances was a good decision. Adjusting the laces eliminates any discomfort.
The main difference from regular road running shoes is the harder sole, designed to handle various complex terrains, providing better protection.
The Ultra Endurance II in US size 8.5 weighs 646 grams per pair, with each shoe weighing 323 grams, which is not particularly light.
3. Performance Review
The North Face trail shoes are designed for complex terrains. I tested them on brick, gravel, stone, and rubber surfaces.
The shoes feel very light, unlike my other heavier trail shoes. Weighing 323 grams each, they are similar to regular cushioned running shoes but without the draggy feel. The forefoot provides natural propulsion, and the heel cushioning is excellent, making the steps light and comfortable.
The Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole with 5mm lugs offers excellent durability and grip, suitable for various outdoor environments. Uphill and downhill runs feel stable, with the outsole gripping the ground firmly.
I tested the shoes on dirt roads with zigzag movements to assess their stability and wrapping performance. The shoes performed well, with good heel support and shock absorption.
The overall feel of the shoes is firm, with clear feedback from the ground, especially on gravel roads. The Snake Plate protection technology offers torsional resistance and foot protection.
I tested the shoes on a weathered riverbank with steep slopes and gravel. The shoes provided stable arch support and excellent grip, preventing ankle twists.
The toe cap design offers protection against impacts, with the molded TPU toe cap effectively shielding the forefoot.
Vibram is synonymous with quality outsoles. After approximately 70km of mixed terrain testing, the Ultra Endurance II showed excellent durability, with minimal wear on the midsole and outsole.
The North Face trail shoes feel more comfortable with use, offering good feedback from the outsole. The sizing is accurate, so you can choose your regular size.
Overall, the Ultra Endurance II possesses all the qualities of a mature and excellent long-distance trail running shoe, performing well in tests. It is suitable for runners of all levels, providing a secure fit and stable steps.
If you are looking to improve your trail running or preparing for long-distance ultra-marathons, the Ultra Endurance II is a safe choice. Summer is the perfect season for trail running, so let's explore the outdoors together!
