The fitness market can be said to be the fastest-growing sector in China's sports industry in recent years. Whether from the perspective of policy, capital, entrepreneurship, or user participation and concepts, it possesses genuine activity and explosive power.
Due to the inherent demand for fitness, cash flow, and the early start of the industry, capital has shown more enthusiasm for it than other sports projects. According to LazyBear Sports, there were 188 investment/merger events in domestic sports-related startups in 2017, with fitness/yoga leading in terms of financing frequency, accounting for 38 events. Over the past three years, fitness has consistently been at the forefront of LazyBear Sports' statistics. In the first half of 2018 alone, there were 22 fitness-themed investments.
During this process, multiple external factors have jointly fostered the diverse and rapidly changing fitness industry we see today. For example, the number of gyms has seen astonishing growth over the past three years. On one hand, there are low-cost, highly replicable, and fast-expanding small gyms; on the other hand, there are premium studios or high-end gyms. Unlike these two booming new types of gyms, traditional comprehensive gyms are facing multiple challenges.
At this point in 2018, LazyBear Sports believes that after three years of rapid development and iteration, 'new gyms' have become more diversified and segmented. Some models have survived market tests while others have been eliminated. Although 'new' is no longer new, the market is still in its early stages with strong demand, and it's too early to say which side will win.
We are witnessing the following changes in the new gym sector:
・Expansion from first-tier cities to second- and third-tier cities, whether through chain expansion or local imitation;
・More segmented and diverse courses in vertical fields, whether personal training, group classes, or free training, have led to the emergence of more specialized venues;
・Continued advancement in fitness intelligence, from intelligent venue management and services to intelligent training;
・Small gyms have become popular, even traditional gyms are increasing their incubation of small premium gyms;
・There has been a noticeable increase in suppliers targeting small premium gyms.
……
We have reason to expect that 2018 will be the year when new gyms find their positioning and truly become widespread. Therefore, LazyBear Sports plans to launch the 'New Gym Gold Rush: Achieving Premium' initiative from September to December this year, which will include a combination of online and offline activities: a wide-ranging online collection of new gyms and multi-city offline visits, culminating in several offline FutureDay series events.
The purpose of the entire plan is twofold: to explore industry value and discuss what constitutes a good, premium, and sustainable fitness studio in today's China, and to accelerate the popularization and penetration of new gyms, focusing on the upgrade needs of quasi-first-tier and some second-tier cities. During this process, we will collaborate with partners to gather industry resources and establish an efficient connection platform in the sports and fitness field. We will also join forces with three leading companies in the industry—Suisheng Fitness (a top domestic fitness equipment solution provider), Les Mills China (a top domestic fitness course content provider), and Codoon (a top domestic gym SaaS + IoT service provider)—to present fitness management content covering aspects such as content, equipment, technology, and operations.
This series of FutureDay events will also be upgraded from previous formats, including customized premium courses, case studies, roundtable discussions, real-time interactive surveys, and product experiences, aiming to provide attendees with more valuable takeaways.
Our first stop will be Chengdu in the southwest. Among quasi-first-tier cities outside Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, Chengdu has always had high commercial value and consumption potential due to its geographical location and local characteristics, attracting many brands to compete. We believe that in the fitness and sports sector, it will also have its unique and vast market to be explored. We welcome interested friends to join us, exchange ideas, and spark new thoughts.
