how to maintain high spiritual state in university

Someone on Zhihu asked, 'How can college students maintain a full mental state?' This question suddenly brought back many memories of my college days. Taking this opportunity, I want to share some of my experiences with the members of our campus club. There's no guiding light here, just some casual chats about finding our own way.

Looking back now, I can only remember two things. Since I studied Broadcasting and Television Directing, I spent my entire college life watching films, writing reviews, revising scripts, shooting films, and editing. Staying up late was inevitable. Every time we edited a film, the whole team would 'dismember' the computer and bring it to the study room, then stock up on snacks. This scene is something I think I will never forget.

The reason I'm sharing this example is that we've heard so many grand principles and countless 'must-do things for college students,' but we've never really considered how to make the most of these four years, which are neither too long nor too short. After overcoming the hurdles of high school, we arrived at a university that had deceived us for nearly 20 years, only to find that everything was different yet somehow the same as we had imagined. The same in that teachers really don't care about you anymore, and parents have finally let go a bit. Not dating feels like falling behind. The difference is that we never expected to be suddenly thrown into a campus, unsure of what goals to pursue or where to go next after working so hard to get into college.

When we were working on our graduation project in our senior year, we often said, 'We probably won't have another chance to devote ourselves wholeheartedly to making a film like this again.'

Yes, at graduation, a crude yet robust guy loudly declared that his dream was to become a producer one day and gather our classmates to make another great film. I haven't seen the script for that film yet, but thinking about his words still makes my blood boil.

What I want to say is, if you don't know where to go next, at least live in the present. Live in your campus, classroom, playground, and library—these are the scenes you once longed for. No matter how bad the school is, it at least gives you free time and a group of 'comrades' who are just as lost as you are.

The other thing was because of a documentary filming practice, we got in touch with an 'Autism Rehabilitation Center' in Chengdu. To prepare for the interview, we watched almost all the documentaries about 'autism' at that time and spent nearly a semester going to the center every week to play with the children and help out. This experience had a significant impact on our entire team. I remember when interviewing the parents, almost every parent broke down in tears instantly when I asked, 'How did you feel when your child was diagnosed?' 'A bolt from the blue'—this experience made me truly understand the meaning of this phrase.

Later, on April 2nd, 'World Autism Awareness Day,' we collaborated with various school clubs to hold an event in the school square. Seeing the blue ribbons fluttering on the campus trees, seeing students learn about autism through this event, understanding that children called 'star children' are not always exceptionally talented in some area as portrayed in films, and realizing how hurtful the term 'mentally retarded' is—these simple yet meaningful realizations were very impactful.

The world is vast if you are willing to go out and see it; the world is small if you just want to stay in your dorm room, passing the days with TV shows and games.

As the movie 'The Continent' says, 'I've heard many truths, but I still can't live this life well.' I think it's probably because hearing without understanding is useless.

Back to the question, I believe that a 'full mental state' refers to a sense of achievement and presence. The triggers for a sense of achievement usually follow three steps: 'I come up with an idea and think it's good'—'I share it with my friends'—'I work hard to realize it'—achievement unlocked. Most people get stuck at the second step and never move forward. The process from 0 to 1 is always difficult and small, with no one watching or applauding. But without 0 to 1, where would 100, 1000, or infinity come from? Just Do It!

Of course, besides the mental aspect, if you stay up late every day and indulge in junk food, no one can save you. Believe this: nothing is worth losing sleep over.
