When it comes to the New Balance brand, most running enthusiasts would not doubt its capability in manufacturing running shoes. As one of the world's top four running shoe brands, New Balance has never let us down. In early 2015, New Balance finally recognized the future of the honeycomb midsole. After the 980, they launched the lighter The 1980, providing an excellent choice for runners seeking speed response and quick foot movement. The honeycomb midsole, Fresh Foam, became a key focus in future NB running shoe designs. Today, we are reviewing the New Balance M1980 in green and gray colorway.

Fresh Foamwas a bold attempt by New Balance. Although its appearance is not outstanding, making it less appealing to those who prioritize aesthetics, the application of Fresh Foam in the 980 allowed more people to experience the cushioning and rebound benefits of this honeycomb-like material. Subsequently, Fresh Foam became a hallmark of New Balance running shoes and a powerful weapon in the midsole competition with other brands.

Appearance: 8/10

In my opinion, the appearance of the 1980 is quite mediocre. If you don't look closely, you wouldn't imagine that this is New Balance's flagship running shoe for 2015. Unlike other brands that rely heavily on color combinations to win more market share while ensuring shoe performance, the 1980 uses a gray mesh upper with the ankle, inner lining, and sole in the currently popular yellow-green color. The insole is a more vibrant magenta. Although the color combination is bright, it is used in less noticeable areas, making the design quite understated. In my words, it is a 'subtly flamboyant' design—steady yet lively.

Comfort: 9.5/10

The New Balance 1980features a synthetic leather and mesh upper, ensuring durability and wear resistance. The upper material is very soft, giving me a barefoot running shoe feel when I first put it on. It fits well with the entire foot, offering excellent wrapping performance, allowing freedom without losing restraint. The insole is designed with numerous ventilation holes to ensure timely sweat evaporation during running, preventing foot slippage and skin abrasions. The sole uses New Balance's latest honeycomb technology, providing softness and good rebound performance.

Shock Absorption: 9.5/10

As a flagship running shoe from New Balance, shock absorption, cushioning, and support are essential features, and the 1980 perfectly embodies these. I am 173 cm tall and weigh 76 kg, which is considered heavy for a marathon runner. My best half-marathon time is 1 hour and 32 minutes, and my best full marathon time is 3 hours and 17 minutes. During my tests of four 12-km runs, one 15-km run, and one full marathon, I only felt a bit uncomfortable with the shoe's softness during the first two 12-km runs. As I gradually adapted and began to control it, the surprises it brought me increased. I tried running a full marathon in them, finishing in 3 hours and 50 minutes. Throughout the run, my feet felt almost ethereal, requiring little effort as the Fresh Foam midsole effectively handled the cushioning and rebound tasks.

As a short-distance training shoe, the 1980's midsole support and shock absorption are also excellent. The midsole design has changed from the original oval honeycomb to a hexagonal design closer to a real honeycomb, making the cushioning, shock absorption, and support more pronounced. Additionally, the midsole and outsole's mid-rear position always stay tightly connected to the ground.

1980The honeycomb on the midsole's left and right sides uses different designs. The outer side, which bears most of the body's pressure during running, uses a hexagonal concave design to effectively absorb cushioning and store energy. The inner side uses a hexagonal convex structure, where the cushioning energy absorbed by the left side is released as rebound force to increase speed.

Durability: 8/10

Personally, I am not very satisfied with the 1980's durability. The entire test covered about 100 km on asphalt roads, concrete roads, and plastic tracks, with asphalt accounting for 80% of the test mileage. However, the pictures show that the outsole's heel outer side's wear resistance is not very satisfactory. Of course, this is greatly related to individual landing posture. Besides this, the midsole's durability is quite good.

Test Summary

1980is a cost-effective professional running shoe. Whether you use it for short distances or marathons, it can handle it effortlessly. Especially with a price around 700 yuan, it has a significant advantage among many professional running shoes. Coupled with the high-tech honeycomb design of the sole, the 1980 is worth owning.
