"The crying child gets the candy," "Trick or treat"... Sweetness, the first taste we perceive, carries many of our fond memories. Sugar is also one of the main sources of energy for the human body, essential for replenishing calories. However, it can also cause weight gain. Imagine this: a"No sweets" VS "Eating a lot of sugar every day"experiment lasting 1-2 months. What changes would occur in the body? How significant would the differences be?

 

Believe it or not, there are people in this world who are willing to be guinea pigs for such experiments. Sacha Harland from the Netherlands and Damon Gameau from the United States decided to use themselves as samples for this crazy experiment:


Sacha decided to completely avoid sugar (as well as alcohol and additives) for a month.

Damon decided to consume 200g of sugar daily for two months (all from "healthy foods").

 

Next, let's see what changes occurred in their bodies during this period.

First, let's look at Sacha, who avoided sugar. Before starting the experiment, he measured his health status. The numbers on his medical report showed that he was generally healthy, except for slightly high cholesterol.

At the start of the experiment, his diet consisted mainly of low-sugar fruits, vegetables, eggs, and yogurt.

By the fourth day of the experiment, he started having wild thoughts, headaches, and often felt hungry...

By the eighth day, he couldn't find any sugar-free drinks other than water and had almost no snacks to eat. He became easily irritable and frequently complained about the ubiquity of foods containing artificial additives and sugar.

At this point, a nutritionist told him,Vegetables, fruits, and high-fiber breadwere his best choices. Many people trying to lose weight avoidoils, meats, and nuts, but as long as they areconsumed in moderation, they are beneficial for both the body and fat loss. They can make you feel more energetic while maintaining your figure.

Finally, by the 25th day, when Sacha was eating oatmeal and bananas for breakfast, he suddenly realized he no longer craved sugar! He used to miss sweets, but now he hardly felt the urge. He also noticed that waking up in the morning was easier, and he didn't feel as tired or weak...

 

By the 30th day, when he went for another check-up, the results were astonishing:

After just one month of avoiding sugar, without any extra exercise, hisweight dropped by 4.5 kilograms, body fat decreased by 1.3%, and even his high blood pressure and cholesterol levels went down!

 

Now let's look at Damon's sugar experiment. Compared to Sacha, he had it much easier. He had to consume 200g of sugar daily. Why 200g? Because that's the average sugar intake in Australia. It sounds a bit scary, equivalent to 400 teaspoons, but Damon found that consuming 200g of sugar daily was quite easy. For example:

"Two apples contain 40g of sugar, and eating them will basically fill you up, so you don't need to eat anything else. But if youjuice the apples, which is about one cup, you easily get 80g of sugardown your throat."

 

And Damon didn't eat candies or donuts, the so-called "junk food," but commonly recognized "healthy foods." Even so, the sugar content in these foods was astonishing. Take breakfast as an example:


Cereal loops: 7.5 teaspoons of sugar

Low-fat yogurt: 4 teaspoons of sugar

Apple juice: 9 teaspoons of sugar

In just one breakfast, he consumed 20 teaspoons of sugar (about 80g). So, eating sugar is incredibly easy. To make it more visual, in the later stages of the experiment, he directly replaced the sugary teriyaki sauce with an equal amount of white sugar, eating it with roasted chicken.

In just 12 days, he gained 3.2kg. Damon, who originally had abs, had excessive visceral fat within 3-4 weeks, even though he maintained his exercise routine during this period.

At the same time, his mental state worsened, and his mood became unstable—happy after eating sweets, but depressed half an hour later. He even found it hard to maintain his usual exercise habits.

By the end of the experiment, in addition to the previous symptoms, Damon also started having skin problems. This was becausethe large intake of sugar disrupted his metabolism, causing frequent acne. Experts said this was a sign ofsevere damage to liver functiondue to excessive sugar.

By the end of the experiment, Damon'swaist circumference had increased by 10 centimeters, his weight had increased by 8 kilograms, and he showed symptoms of fatty liver. Even his blood fat content had increased 18 times!

Throughout the sugar experiment, the total calorie intake Damon consumed was the same as before; he just replaced healthy foods with high-sugar foods.

 

Consuming sugar for 60 days VS avoiding sugar for one month—although these experiments involved only individual samples and lacked strong scientific rigor, they still vividly demonstrated the dangers of excessive sugar intake and indiscriminate consumption of sweets.

As one of the substances essential for sustaining life, a moderate daily intake of sugar is beneficial for both physical health and mental well-being. However, unrestrained sugar consumption (especially from processed foods and beverages) is particularly harmful to the body.

 

Tips for eating sugar:

· The World Health Organization recommends that daily sugar intake (excluding natural sugars in fresh fruits, vegetables, and milk) should be less than 6-12 teaspoons (about 4g per teaspoon);

· Before shopping, check the nutritional labels for sugar content and be mindful of "hidden sugars";

· Eat more natural foods (whole grains, fruits, vegetables, etc.) and fewer processed foods.
