a life with one leg can also be wonderful
"They told me that I would have to rely on crutches for the rest of my life, but that doesn't mean I'm going to die."
At the age of 16, Nikki Bradley was diagnosed by doctors with Ewing's Sarcoma, a very rare form of bone cancer.
Nikki immediately underwent two hip replacement surgeries. She admitted that the outcomes were actually quite bad, requiring radiation therapy and taking seven to eight very strong painkillers daily. To manage the pain, Nikki began trying some weight-related physical training, and from that point on, she gradually started to change bit by bit.
Later, Nikki Bradley founded the charity event "Fighting Fit for Ewings." She was determined to fill her life with as many fun activities as possible. From abseiling to mountain climbing, Nikki, with her crutches, seemed no different from ordinary people—in fact, she did even more than most!
Her life began to become rich and colorful.
Fitness and Exercise:
This was almost a guarantee and driving force for Nikki to complete all her subsequent projects. Before she started regular exercise, Nikki relied on medication to help alleviate the pain she experienced daily. Later, she decided to try something new. Exercise, combined with a healthy diet, seemed like a good solution.
To get the most out of her workouts, Nikki had to find a way to adapt each exercise to her needs. Over the years, she received a lot of help from experienced trainers. After many attempts, she wanted to strengthen her "bad leg" but ultimately decided to give up and accept that it would never improve. She then focused on strengthening her body, and the results were amazing.
Charity Activities:
Nikki Bradley is the founder of "Fighting Fit for Ewings," a speaker, client manager, columnist, and fitness enthusiast. Her life may not be considered normal, but it certainly looks fulfilling.
As a spokesperson and speaker, Nikki's talks always encourage people, letting them know that the current situation is not as bad as it seems and to look further ahead, because that's what she does.
Extreme Challenges:
In addition, Nikki Bradley often participates in extreme physical challenges that seemed impossible for her to complete before.
Only a very few people can climb the ridge of County Donegal, the northernmost part of Ireland, but Nikki Bradley did it... with her crutches. Surrounded by cliffs and rough seas, the ridge is very difficult to climb, let alone with crutches. Especially for her, slipping on wet rocks or losing balance on the narrow grassy edges at the top was a real concern.
"I felt like I spent the whole day in that area."
"There wasn't a real path to walk on, and I had to walk sideways to accommodate my crutches."
"I probably fell about 50 times. But I knew it was unavoidable, and I love such adventures."
She also attempted to break the women's 5KM single-leg world record, but the final result was disappointing—she missed it by just one second.
"I knew the previous world record time was 49 minutes. I completed the 5 kilometers in 44 minutes and 21 seconds. I was very excited; I thought I had broken the world record. But I later found out that American athlete Anna had already done it in 44 minutes and 20 seconds, just one second faster than me. Due to delays in processing the record, Guinness hadn't updated their website, so I couldn't have known."
"This taught me that every second counts."
Besides these, Nikki Bradley also completed a climb of Errigal Mountain from the north side, a route primarily for professional climbers, but Nikki did it.Later, she also tried abseiling in a cave in Iceland.
This is the story of Nikki Bradley, and her exciting life is far from over...
