To some people, these world records might seem like mere attention-seeking stunts, not worth mentioning.

However, as a large event with increasing participation, the marathon has never lacked ordinary enthusiasts. Although they may not have the athletic abilities and skills of professional athletes, they share a passion for marathon events. Many of them, while attracting attention, also contribute to charitable causes.

In 2011, a conservationist ran a marathon dressed in a heavy rhino costume to raise awareness for 'Save the Rhino'.

In 2012, a slim female runner ran with a hula hoop, raising over £2,000 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
