1. My Clothing Philosophy: Why Good Base Layers are Essential for Outdoor Sports

Outdoor sports are familiar to everyone, including trail running, mountaineering, cycling, hiking, etc. In outdoor sports, necessary equipment is crucial to ensure safety and efficiency. Among the various equipment, suitable clothing is essential, and the underwear that is in close contact with the skin should not be overlooked.

When it comes to underwear, many people find it unremarkable, but this is not the case. One important function of underwear is warmth, which can be divided into static warmth and dynamic warmth. Static warmth refers to the warmth performance of clothing during light physical activities when there is little to no sweating. Generally, the thicker the clothing, the warmer it feels, such as down jackets which have the best static warmth performance. However, the downside of such clothing is poor breathability; once the body sweats, it does not dry easily, causing a rapid loss of heat, especially during activities like mountaineering or cycling where the body sweats a lot and feels cold when resting. This brings us to the crucial concept of dynamic warmth in outdoor sports (simply put, dynamic warmth refers to the warmth performance of clothing during intense or strenuous activities).

Many people do not correctly distinguish between static warmth and dynamic warmth, leading to inappropriate choices of warm clothing, resulting in poor warmth effects during outdoor sports.

Years of outdoor experience have taught me that in outdoor sports, besides shoes, good underwear is a must because it is worn close to the skin and directly affects comfort, sweat-wicking, and breathability. Of course, for everyday work, outdoor functional underwear is also very comfortable to wear (perhaps because I personally like sports, I prefer sports series clothing). Therefore, whether for sports or work, you should choose a good set of underwear for yourself, and the CRAFT Red Label base layer is your best choice. Of course, CRAFT offers other series besides the Red Label for you to choose from.

2. Brand Introduction

I won't go into much detail about the brand introduction here; please refer to the following two pictures (images sourced from the internet).

3. Product Photos: From Unboxing to Detail Display

Opening the courier packaging bag reveals the original packaging box of the underwear, with a prominent CRAFT logo and 'keep warm' text on the front. The color and size of the clothing are indicated in the upper right corner, simple and clear. The side features an anti-counterfeiting label, clearly visible.

The packaging box has a pull-out design, very convenient! The clothes are neatly folded with a noticeable tag but lack a plastic bag for sealing, leaving the clothes exposed in the box, which feels slightly inappropriate. Upon unfolding the clothes, you can see the tags with English instructions, lacking Chinese instructions, which is inconvenient to read! The collar has a round neck design with the CRAFT logo printed on the front. The stitching on the cuffs and shoulders is tight and meticulous, indicating excellent craftsmanship. Overall, the 3D ergonomic tailoring makes the clothes fit snugly, with larger mesh knitting on the shoulders and sides to enhance breathability in these areas that stretch more during activities.

4. Static Wear Experience: Comfort and Size Recommendations

Based on the past few days of wearing experience, the comfort level is quite high (the fabric composition is 61% POLYAMIDE, 35% POLYESTER, 4% ELASTANE), and the fit is good. However, due to size issues, there are noticeable wrinkles and folds around the neck and shoulders, and the sleeves and waist are relatively long. Personally, the size is not very suitable (I am 171cm, 67Kg, and usually wear size M for quick-dry functional underwear, but this set in size M has the aforementioned issues). This product might be designed according to European and American body types, so as an Asian user, I recommend checking the detailed size data when purchasing and not just relying on S, M, L sizes!

5. Dynamic Wear Experience: Field Test for Running and Cycling

For outdoor sports clothing, static performance is not the primary consideration; the key is its performance during outdoor activities. To evaluate its performance in outdoor sports, I conducted tests in two activity states: 'road cycling' and 'outdoor running.'

Test Conditions

(Running data collected from Codoon, climate data from Moji Weather)

Road Cycling: February 18, 2017, 13:30—14:40

Outdoor Running: February 18, 2017, 20:00—21:30

Test Conditions: 21 km road cycling + 11 km outdoor running

Cycling Environment (Road):

Perceived Temperature: 10°; Humidity: 20%; Wind Speed: Level 3

Running Environment (Road):

Perceived Temperature: 3°; Humidity: 26%; Wind Speed: Level 3

Through the evaluation of these two sports, I personally think that the clothing is more comfortable for cycling than running. During cycling, due to the wind speed, the sweat on the back dries quickly, and the warmth of the clothing is also very good. However, during running, after 6 km, the back of the clothing was noticeably soaked with sweat, and by the end of the 11 km run, there was a slight sticky feeling on the back, so the sweat-wicking breathability is not very good. The advantage is that during the exercise, the clothing has good stretchability, and there was no feeling of tightness.
