UCI Time Trial Regulations
Individual Time-Trial Races
Course
The race course should be safe and well-marked.
After the race starts, the route can only be used by athletes and following vehicles.
Every 5 kilometers, the remaining distance for the athletes should be marked.
On uphill sections, the distance should be marked every kilometer. The organizing committee must also provide a loop of at least 800 meters near the starting point for athletes to warm up.
Starting Order
The organizing committee determines the starting order of athletes based on the standards set in the race plan and technical guide. 2.4.007 Athletes start at equal intervals, but the interval time for later starting athletes can be increased. 2.4.008 The starting order for time-trial stages in multi-day races refers to
Article 2.6.022.
The starting order of athletes in World Championships and the Olympics is determined by the UCI.
Start
Each athlete must report to the check-in area and have their bike inspected 15 minutes before the start. (Revised January 1, 2004)
Athletes should start standing. A holder should hold the athlete's bike and then release it without pushing. The same holder should hold the bike for each athlete.
If an electronic timing strip is used at the starting line, the distance between the front wheel's contact point and the electronic timing strip must be 10 cm when the athlete is released. The start should take place on a starting ramp. (Revised September 1, 2000, January 1, 2004)
Athletes should start upon the timekeeper's signal, at which point timing begins. The timekeeper should count down. If an athlete starts late, their time should be calculated from their original start time. (Revised September 1, 2000)
The start moment is counted when the front wheel contacts the electronic timing strip on the starting line. If an athlete starts within 5 seconds before or after the countdown reaches zero, an electronic timer should be used. If an athlete starts more than 5 seconds after the countdown or if there is an issue with the electronic timer, the athlete's time will be recorded manually from the end of the countdown. (Revised September 1, 2000, January 1, 2004)
Time-Keeping
Timing should be conducted at several points along the course to ensure athletes and spectators continuously receive information as the race progresses. 2.4.015 The finish time should be accurate to at least 1/10th of a second.
In World Championships and the Olympics, the time should be accurate to 1/100th of a second. (Revised September 1, 2000, January 1, 2004)
Racing Procedure
If an athlete is overtaken by another athlete, the overtaken athlete must neither lead nor follow closely. When an athlete is about to overtake another, they must maintain a lateral distance of at least 2 meters. After 1 kilometer, the overtaken athlete should fall back to maintain a distance of at least 25 meters from the other athlete.
If necessary, referees and assistant referees should enforce the 2-meter and 25-meter distances. Despite the penalties outlined in rules 12.1.040 and 12.1.041.
Athletes must not assist each other.
The race rules should specify whether athletes are allowed to receive food and other supplies.
Following Vehicles
Deleted as of January 1, 2003.
Following vehicles must maintain a distance of at least 10 meters from the athletes, must not overtake or parallel the athletes. If an athlete has a mechanical issue, they can either fix it themselves or receive assistance from the team car parked on the roadside without obstructing others.
When the distance between the overtaken athlete and the overtaking athlete is less than 100 meters, the team car of the overtaken athlete must immediately move behind the team car of the overtaking athlete.
Only when the distance between athletes is at least 50 meters can the following vehicle drive between the two athletes; if the distance decreases again, the vehicle must return to its original position behind the trailing athlete.
The following team car can carry necessary spare wheels and bicycles.
Equipment and personnel in the following team car must not extend outside the vehicle.
If motorcycles are allowed to assist athletes with mechanical issues, they can only carry spare wheels.
Microphones or horns may be used.
Participation
For individual time trials open to commercial teams as specified in articles 2.1.002 and 2.1.003, the organizer must invite and sign agreements with commercial teams, rather than directly inviting athletes.
