World Athletics releases new regulations for running shoes

On January 31, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced on its official website the modification of rules regarding competition shoes for elite athletes.

The new rules for competition shoes for athletes are as follows:

1.The thickness of the shoe sole must not exceed 40mm;

2. Except for spike shoes, other shoes are only allowed to have one layer of rigid material (carbon plate or other embedded material);

3. Spike shoes are allowed to add one piece of rigid material for fixing the spikes, but the thickness of the sole must not exceed 30mm.

According to the new rules, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% meets the new regulations.

World Athletics also stated that after April 30, all running shoes must be available on the open market for more than four months before they can be used in competitions. In other words, no athlete is allowed to wear prototype shoes (i.e., concept shoes) developed by sports brands during competitions.

If World Athletics believes that a certain running shoe or technology does not comply with the regulations, it has the right to investigate the shoe. During the investigation, the shoe will be banned from use. During competitions, referees also have the right to investigate the shoes worn by athletes. If they believe the shoes do not comply with the regulations, they can require the athlete to provide the shoes for inspection immediately after the race.

Last year, after the NEXT% was launched at the London Marathon, it swept across major marathon events and became a tool for breaking world records. Therefore, it is very likely that the NEXT% will appear again at the Tokyo Olympics.
