The reasons why I love the 2019 Chengdu Marathon
Run once, discover a city
Chengdu is a leisurely and comfortable city. It is neither as busy as a big city nor as quiet as a small town. It has a lot of delicious food, a mix of urban and rural areas with a touch of pastoral scenery, and the people of Chengdu are very warm-hearted. Running towards the World Marathon Majors candidate event, the Chengdu Marathon has finally arrived.
On October 23, 2019, from Shenzhen Bao'an Airport to Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, it was raining in Chengdu, but the weather on the day of the race was perfect.
In the days before the race, of course, I visited local attractions, including Wide and Narrow Alleys, the Giant Panda Base, Wenshu Monastery, Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, People's Park, Wuhou Shrine, and Jinli. (If you come to Chengdu next time, I personally think these places are quite nice, hope this helps, hehe)
On October 27, 2019, at 7:30 AM, after the national anthem was played, the starting gun for the third Chengdu Marathon was fired. 30,000 people started running from the Jinsha Site, beginning a wonderful 42.195 KM journey. I happened to get my period right before the race, and my friends were worried and told me to give up the full marathon because I had been feeling unwell and had gone to the hospital for an IV. I said no, I haven't even started running yet. I don't want to give up without even trying. I will pace myself and prioritize safety, but no matter what, I want to give it a try first to see if I can do it...
Running from the brilliant ancient civilization to the vibrant new era, Chengdu Marathon had 26 music cheering stations. Every time I passed a music station, I couldn't help but bounce to the rhythm, hahaha. The citizens were very enthusiastic, with elderly people cheering and children holding handmade cheering signs along the route. Seeing these scenes made me feel very warm and close.
When the full and half marathon routes split, the race truly began for me. Fellow runners said that after about thirty kilometers, one hits the wall, and it's crucial to be careful and avoid injuries. I told myself to keep going, to run forward with all my effort, and to stay strong!
In the final two kilometers, the aid station was amazing, offering many Chengdu delicacies like Bobo Chicken, Sweet Water Noodles, candies, and pan-fried buns. It was dubbed the 'Fairy Marathon Aid Station' by fellow runners.
I finally finished the race, safely reaching the finish line before the cutoff time. I combined running and walking in the second half and surprisingly finished within 5 hours, which was an achievement for a slow runner like me. I ran slowly, listening to music and enjoying the scenery along the course, knowing that my family and friends were waiting for me at home. Running with the wind, freedom is the direction.
The Chengdu Marathon was worth the trip. There are videos capturing moments of your run, and I really liked the dynamic music design. I am very grateful to all the behind-the-scenes staff and the encouraging spectators. With every shout of 'Go!' and 'Keep it up!' Chengdu Marathon was fantastic. I hope to come back next year!
