I. Personal Safety in Trail Running

a. Inclement Weather

Sometimes, the weather can entirely determine the difficulty of a trail run. The same course or route can vary greatly in difficulty under different weather conditions.

Before setting off, have a comprehensive understanding of the weather at your destination. Be aware of the challenges that adverse weather can bring. Slippery and muddy roads, fog that obstructs vision in the mountains, rapidly rising streams, the dangers of flash floods and landslides, and sudden lightning storms have all occurred in trail races. Choosing the right gear and having an emergency plan are essential for embarking on your trail running journey.

b. Getting Lost

Trail running is inherently risky. You can't expect trail races to have clear markers every kilometer like marathons. Maps, GPS tracks, and navigation devices are almost essential equipment for participating in trail races or training.

Of course, getting lost isn't the end of the world. First, keep a calm mind, recall possible wrong turns, and look for human-made marks on the path such as footprints, trekking pole marks, or even litter (in many Chinese trail routes, discarded litter often serves as the best markers!).

If you confirm that you are seriously lost, first conserve your food and seek nearby villages or inhabited areas for help.

c. Food and Water

Sometimes, trail running tests the strength of your stomach. Reduce the intake of processed foods, highly stimulating foods, and wild plants or fruits. Do not drink unfiltered stream or river water (carry a straw that can purify water).

d. Hypothermia

In most outdoor accidents, hypothermia is the leading cause of death. In mountainous areas with significant elevation changes, temperature variations can be far beyond what one might imagine, and crosswinds at mountain passes can accelerate the loss of body heat. The most effective way to prevent hypothermia is to carry adequate gear: windproof jackets, emergency blankets, etc. You might not have had the chance to use them in your trail runs yet, but they could save your life when needed. When you feel exhausted and the temperature starts to drop, find a wind-sheltered area. Do not sit down or stop moving immediately; moderate exercise is the best way to maintain your body heat.

e. Heatstroke

Although there are not many trail races held in extreme heat in China, we still cannot ignore the risk of heatstroke in trail running. Similar to hypothermia, heatstroke can sometimes be hard to detect, especially when facing a long, exposed uphill. Prolonged sun exposure during the ascent can lead to rapid loss of body fluids and an imbalance of electrolytes. Upon reaching the summit, runners often neglect to rehydrate and replenish electrolytes in their rush to continue. Sun exposure increases the risk of heatstroke. Physical sun protection tools like hats, sunglasses, headscarves, and arm sleeves help maintain normal body temperature. Always monitor your physical condition, regularly and timely replenish water and electrolytes, and use water (preferably with ice) at aid stations to cool down key heat-dissipating areas of your body for better performance.

f. Rivers

During trail runs, you may encounter rivers or streams (especially after rain). First, assess whether you can safely cross. Then, find the safest crossing point (which may not be your usual crossing spot), maintain three points of contact (using tools if necessary), and move slowly. If you determine that the current location is impassable, do not force it. Look upstream for a better crossing point or return the way you came; either option is better than recklessly entering the water.

II. Environmental Guidelines for Trail Running

Unlike the past, environmental protection is now considered a crucial and unavoidable aspect in any situation. In China, where environmental legislation is not as stringent, the concept of environmental protection relies more on personal discipline and attitude. For trail running enthusiasts,

there is undoubtedly a deep love and longing for nature, making environmental protection an unshirkable responsibility for us. Carry portable water cups, avoid using disposable utensils, do not litter, do not damage the vegetation along the path, and leave no trace. These seemingly trivial matters are actually very challenging to implement.
