this year, thank you for running through my world
Faithfully recording every runner's highlight moments is my pursuit.
I am Dai Wu Yan, thank you for running through my entire world.
Time flies, and 2017 has already passed. As a novice in the running community, I will summarize 2017 with the beginning of an essay I wrote in elementary school. I will write whatever comes to mind, whether it's sunny or dark, positive or depressing. It seems that everything is vivid in my memory; everyone is right in front of me. I haven't read much, and I write even less. I want to use the limited vocabulary I can muster to write this weighty summary. And I have seriously written this title: Running Through My Entire World.
01.
Everyone has their own little world, and several worlds at that. The desk is the world of work, running is a world of personal reflection, the car is a world of solitude, and home is the entire world of family.
As a photographer, picking up the camera is my entire world. I carry my entire world, capturing your angelic smiles and devilish pains. When I look back at the photos, I see a variety of expressions, gestures, whether happy, sad, numb, or dejected.
This is the different life experience that marathons bring. I am a recorder, faithfully capturing that moment of your entire world, or perhaps I am just passing through your entire world.
02.
There are always a few minutes, each second of which,
you would trade a year for.
There are always a few tears, each drop of which,
you would use your whole body to feel.
There are always a few roads, each meter of which,
you would measure with your feet.
There are always a few people, each one of whom,
you would spend a lifetime waiting for.
There are always a few slopes, each step of which,
you must use all your strength to persist.
There was a time when I didn't want to do anything. I was just counting the days until March 12th, the start of the new season, the Suzhou Jinji Lake Half Marathon. But when the day finally came, I was inexplicably nervous. After two months without shooting, do I still remember how to shoot? Can I still shoot well?
When a body collapsed about ten meters behind me, time froze for those few seconds. Death had never been so close, but fortunately, the person was out of danger in the end. Be well-prepared, respect the race. Finish safely and enjoy the race. A year's training is for those few joyful finishes.
There weren't many major races in the first half of the year, but the few that were held were all rainy. I felt every drop of rain with my whole body, yes, I was almost completely soaked. The rain in Wuxi injured many, but surprisingly, it also led many to achieve personal bests.
The rain in Wuhan was even heavier, but at the same time, Hengdian turned road running into swimming. Luckily, I chose Wuhan, where I witnessed what real security means. Wherever I went, there were armed police, security personnel, and volunteers everywhere. At that moment, Wuhan was the safest place in the world.
Zhengkai is a must-run race for any straight man. Running from one city to another, meter by meter, the course is very straight and rough. Every tough guy must run it once in their life; it's a marathon with only one right-angle turn. I was at that turn, and if I go again, I'll still be at that turn.
Dalian and Qinhuangdao. My first back-to-back major races. The weather was great. On the train from Dalian to Qinhuangdao, it was a magical moment. The table next to us was the host who would entertain us in Qinhuangdao, whom we had never contacted before. Behind us were the core members of Running Vitamins, and in front of us were the main photographers of marathon photos.
At that moment, the world felt so small. Perhaps one day, at some moment, the friends and rivals you are willing to spend a lifetime waiting for might pass you by on the racecourse or sit in the row in front of you on the same train.
During the summer vacation, one should come to the refreshing Guizhou. The saying 'no three feet of flat land' describes Guizhou. In Guiyang, I can't forget those endless slopes, the despair of riding a shared bike uphill, and the lack of courage to even look up at the slope. Fortunately, the racecourse was set in the new district, where they say there aren't many slopes.
At that moment, I deeply understood the feeling of having big slopes on the racecourse. Heartbreak Hill brings a sense of desperate helplessness, a thrill of rebirth from the brink of death. Liupanshui also deeply hurt me, just because I was sunburned for two hours, and I peeled several layers of skin afterward. The sun on the plateau is very generous, but it's not something you can afford to be exposed to.
03.
Dark training, registration, lottery, travel,
were the routine actions of this year.
Small gatherings, chance encounters, finishing races, taking photos,
were the things I wanted to do most this year.
Men, women, old, young,
were the friends I wanted to meet most this year.
Strong winds, icy rain, darkness, low temperatures,
were the most embarrassing memories of this year.
Helplessness, hesitation, confusion, change,
were the most difficult choices of this year.
The second half of the year's races started with the Harbin Food Festival. You could treat Harbin as a trip since you could also visit the capital. After all, the Beijing Marathon was coming soon. Participating in the Beijing Marathon is a supreme honor, and in an era generally lacking in faith, it seems that only the national flag in Tiananmen Square can evoke a bit of pride.
As I write this, I close my eyes and seem to return to the flag, with 30,000 runners passing by Tiananmen. When I finally passed the Bird's Nest, my heart couldn't calm down for a long time. How did it end so quickly?
Xi'an was the most surprising race. Before going, I never expected that the whole city seemed to come out to cheer for the runners. The course was lined with dense crowds, making the runners' blood boil. Coupled with the generous race packs and finish packs, and the strong supplies on the course, it made the registration fee feel incredibly worthwhile.
Meeting friends, chance encounters during the race, and small gatherings after the race were even more delightful. Bringing the fiery passion of Xi'an to Shijiazhuang, the biting cold wind made me restless. Thanks to the sponsor Guirenniao for setting up a stall at the starting point, I immediately sponsored a down jacket with cash, allowing me to retreat unscathed.
Taking advantage of the Shaoxing Marathon, I visited the hometown of Wang Xizhi. Wang Xizhi is an old friend who brought me much pain, tormenting me time and again with the Lanting Xu. This torment was completely vented during the Shanghai Marathon shoot, achieving a personal best. Without the lofty faith of the capital, in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, the number of sub-three-hour finishers also hit a personal best.
As the marathon movement continues to gain popularity, this speed will increase significantly. Shanghai was a grand gathering, with many long-admired friends, men and women, young and old, none of whom could be missed. The joy of a long-awaited reunion quickly turned into a feeling of meeting too late, and soon into a promise of future meetings.
With admiration for the Chairman, I came to Changsha. But what greeted me was light rain, followed by unexpected wind. Especially on the Orange Isle Bridge, the wind was strong enough to make one question life. In the icy, stormy, and dark ice cave, meeting old friends, there was only one sentence left: Are you still alive?
The weather experience in Changsha was comprehensive. Missing Changsha means missing an unforgettable world.
When the north was already frozen, the south was still basking in the sun, and it was time to head south. As soon as I got out of Guangzhou Railway Station, I was shocked by the long-standing slogan: Reunify the Motherland, Revitalize China. It immediately reminded me of the slogan on the Xiamen Marathon course: One Country, Two Systems, Reunify China.
Guided by this brilliant thought, I headed straight for the course, only to be solidly separated by high barriers. Wandering helplessly by the blue barriers, I had to change my plan and shoot all the way with frustration. Responding to the calls of my little buddies, I left with the lingering taste of hot pot, promising to meet again after a long separation.
04.
On the night of the winter solstice, I was fortunate to dine with the hottest celebrity in the running community at the restaurant 'Passing Through Your Entire World.' We ate, chatted, listened to stories, and talked about work. I gained a lot, including the title of this article. Once the theme was determined, the content naturally came to mind, and it was written in one go.
I am an ordinary photographer. When I wait for you by the racecourse, within a 15-meter radius, that is my territory, my entire world. I like that kind of world, look forward to every race's world, and enjoy the world I have. It is my honor to encounter you in my world.
After taking millions of photos, I, naturally slow-witted, began to understand some principles. Runners are a very rational group, regardless of where you come from, what profession you are in, or your gender or age. They don't compete on looks or background.
Fairly competing on the same course, challenging themselves, each taking what they need, whether lavish or frugal. A good photo is always the result of the joint effort of the runner and the photographer. So I want to thank every one of you who performed wonderfully in my lens, and the even better you in the future.
Running through my entire world, each of you is so stunningly beautiful.
Running through my entire world, each of you is so dignified and impressive.
Running through my entire world, each of you is so unique.
Running through my entire world, I envy you.
Running through my entire world, I am jealous of you.
Running through my entire world, I love you.
