In recent years, running has become a popular form of exercise for many people. Especially in the scorching summer, more runners choose to train on treadmills in gyms to avoid the sweltering weather. However, running on a treadmill can be dangerous if you don't master the proper techniques.
According to a report by Beijing Youth Daily, Mr. Gao, a fitness enthusiast, accidentally fell on a treadmill in a gym in Shunyi, resulting in a fracture. However, the gym did not notice the problem immediately. Mr. Gao was sent to the hospital with the help of other gym members and was diagnosed with a fracture.
Mr. Gao subsequently had multiple negotiations with the gym, which were unsuccessful, and eventually took the gym to court, demanding compensation for medical expenses amounting to over 10,000 yuan. After a court trial, the gym was ordered to compensate for the medical expenses due to its failure to fulfill safety obligations.

In just half a year, over 600 fitness disputes occurred.
The Shunyi District People's Court reported that in the first half of 2018 alone, the Shunyi Court handled over 600 fitness-related disputes. These disputes mainly revolved around issues with fitness cards and personal injuries sustained during fitness activities. The majority, over 400 cases, involved disputes related to fitness cards.
Research has identified five main characteristics of fitness disputes:
First, disputes can easily lead to group disputes. In such cases, the operators often have multiple branches, ranging from a few to dozens, with a large and widely distributed membership base. Once a dispute occurs, it can easily escalate into a group case. The plaintiffs are mostly individual consumers, and the defendants are often small-scale fitness companies or individual businesses, forming a 'many-to-one' litigation pattern.
Second, fitness card cases usually have clear facts and legal relationships. Disputes often arise because businesses attract consumers with various discounts to prepay, but then fail to provide the agreed-upon services.
Third, individual fitness card cases involve relatively small amounts, mostly around one to two thousand yuan, but the total amount involved for the same defendant can be significant.
Fourth, agreements between plaintiffs and defendants are often verbal, with plaintiffs only able to provide membership or consumption cards as evidence.
Fifth, fitness operators often lack the ability to fulfill and compensate. In fitness card disputes, due to the lack of effective supervision of prepayments, if operators misuse prepaid funds, leading to business deterioration or malicious fund transfers, they will lack the ability to settle debts. In personal injury disputes, if consumers suffer serious injuries, gyms often also lack the ability to compensate.

What should you pay attention to before getting a fitness card?
Many people hesitate when choosing a gym because they have had experiences where they joined a gym, but it closed down after a few months.
As a result, their fitness cards became useless, a common issue with gyms. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a large gym, which is a responsible choice for yourself. Here are some points to consider before getting a fitness card:
1. Before getting a fitness card, fully understand the business's qualifications, reputation, and the details of card discounts, and sign a written contract.
2. When getting a fitness card, avoid prepaying large amounts to prevent unnecessary financial losses if the gym goes bankrupt.
3. Before starting fitness activities, have a comprehensive and objective evaluation of your physical condition and choose fitness programs accordingly.
4. Develop a sense of rights protection. During the process of getting a fitness membership card, if you find your rights being violated, keep and organize medical bills and original purchase receipts. Additionally, you can obtain original surveillance footage by reporting to the police to aid in protecting your rights.

What should you pay attention to when running on a treadmill?
Running on a treadmill is not as simple as you might think. Improper use can easily lead to injuries or other accidents.
Don't look down to watch videos
Many treadmills now come with screens that provide more information and even have video playback functions. If you watch videos while running, you may easily end up looking down and hunching over, causing your body to lean too far forward. If you get too engrossed, you might lose track of your speed, leading to potential dangers.
Increase speed gradually
When running on a treadmill, gradually increase the speed. When you first get on the treadmill, don't set the speed too high. Start at '3' and gradually increase it. If youset the speed too high and your staminacan't keep up,you are very likely to fall.
Don't run for too long
When running on a treadmill, you should also control the duration.Generally, 30 minutes of exercise can yield good results. For regular runners, it is generally recommended not to exceed 60 minutes per session. Running for too long can lead to excessive fatigue and increase joint wear.
Use the incline function appropriately
During regular training, if you want to simulate outdoor hill running, you can slightly raise the front of the treadmill to reduce the risk of injury. However, be cautious not to set the incline too high, as it can cause Achilles tendon or calf injuries. Also, avoid running for too long at a high incline.
Don't jump off while the machine is running
The main cause of injuries on treadmills is that many beginners jump off while the treadmill is running at high speed. The correct approach is to slow down the treadmill and lower the incline before getting off. Therefore, wearing the treadmill safety clip is very important to prevent such incidents.
Slow down gradually when finishing
It's not appropriate to get off the treadmill immediately after running. This can easilycause insufficient blood supply to the brain, and in severe cases, lead to shock. So, as you finish running, gradually slow down the speed until your heart rate drops below 120. Transition from running to walking to give your body time to adjust.
Pay attention to your heart rate
In recent years, there have been frequent cases of sudden death on treadmills, mostly due to not paying attention to heart rate issues. Generally, it is best to keep your heart rate during exercise at 60% to 80% of your maximum heart rate to avoid accidents caused by an excessively high heart rate.
